A first look at Sun Princess, the giant new ship from Princess Cruises

newest princess cruise ship

Star Princess joins her sister ship, Sun Princess, as the largest ships ever built for Princess at 175,500 tons and carrying 4,300 guests. The new ship is built on a platform that is distinctly different and unique to Princess, designed to simultaneously embrace the Princess heritage while celebrating the romance of the sea by offering more dynamic, outward views. A traditional naming ceremony celebration will take place at the Port of Los Angeles on April 29, 2022, with more details to follow. TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard.

Design

They have been designed to be significantly bigger than previous Princess ships and offer several notable new-for-the-line features. "This is an historic day as our new Sun Princess sets sail on her inaugural voyage, and our guests get to experience our sensational, next-level Love Boat firsthand," John Padgett, Princess Cruises' president, said Wednesday as the vessel began its first voyage. "The ship is a magnificent showcase of advanced design, technology and craftsmanship, with elevated spaces and experiences all focused on taking the Princess vacation experience to a new level." The back wall of Horizons is all windows, allowing for fantastic wake views.

The area also has a ropes course with swinging bridges and balance beams and a climbing wall-like experience that will take visitors to a lookout at the very top of the ship, with slides that will take them back down. The California-based line's new ship, Sun Princess, is its biggest ever by far. Our most technologically advanced performance space can shapeshift into different designs, even in the round, to suit all our new production shows.

Even if you’re not sailing to Naples (this time), you can still enjoy one of their greatest contributions to the culinary world. Gigi’s Pizzeria serves up certified authentic Neapolitan pizza made to order from scratch in a cheery restaurant named after our very own executive chef and inspired by the colors and landscapes of the Amalfi coast. It is, as Princess says on its website, a "diversified and relaxing experience" — to me, relaxing always being the operative word.

Favorites like Sabatini’s, the Crown Grill and Alfredo’s pizza are back, the latter with a Neapolitan oven. O’Malley’s Irish Pub, which debuted on Enchanted Princess, is an expanded venue, with space for entertainment and a menu with favorites like fish and chips. The World Marketplace buffet, in particular, will have more stations, in a space called Eat Street, as well as grab-and-go options. In a first for the line, one “storefront,” as Parker called it, will be vegan and vegetarian food. Some Cabana mini-suites are completely private, while others face directly to the Cabana Deck.

You'll typically find an espresso drink-serving, conducive-to-conversation cafe at the base of each of these spaces and other venues for conversation, such as wine and Champagne bars, plus a few shops. The entertainment offerings on board the Sun Princess are just as innovative and thoughtfully designed as the ship itself. In fact, we're transforming the future of entertainment not just at sea, but anywhere.

They have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people. While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's oldest vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board. Measuring 145,000 gross tons, Discovery Princess is the biggest Princess cruise ship ever built and has more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than many older Princess ships. On our newest ships, Sky Princess®, Enchanted Princess® and Discovery Princess®, you'll find refreshing new opportunities for aquatic relaxation. In addition to more spa tubs, the ship has two deep-tank pools, linked by sunken, communal seating, adjacent to the top-deck bar. At the ship’s aft end, the infinity-style Wakeview pool and bar offer spectacular views of the horizon.

They will also receive $200 per person for change fees related to air travel. Princess is also offering financial reimbursement for select travel costs for guests who have already arrived ahead of their sailing and for guests who have not yet started their travel certain changes fees related to flights. Passengers who were booked on the February 18 voyage will receive a full refund of the cruise fare along with any additional onboard services that were pre-purchased, as well as a 50% future cruise credit (FCC) that can be used on a future Princess voyage. After two canceled cruises, the 177,882-tonne, 4,300-passenger Sun Princess set sail on February 28, 2024, and currently is sailing a series of Mediterranean voyages before debuting in Ft. Princess’ oldest ship underwent a major renovation back in 2019, adding fan-favorite restaurants like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill, and Coffee & Cones.

Windows grace nearly every public room, flooding them with natural light and sea views that are both appreciated and, these days, increasingly rare on big ships that tend to be quite inward-facing. Finally, cabin corridors are crisp and wide, for the most part, with touchless door access enabled thanks to Princess's Medallion technology. And, unlike our experience on some of the older ships in the fleet, our Medallions have worked flawlessly so far aboard Sun Princess.

If magic isn’t your bag, don’t worry, there are still innovations to be found. The ceiling is higher here, to accommodate the more modern games that are being developed, Parker said. While the Piazza is a Princess standby, the Sun Princess version is larger and more rounded on the inside as well; essentially, the Sphere wraps around and encompasses the Piazza. The space also holds an enclosed Seawalk, where you can look down to the ocean below. (January 24, 2024) -- The first cruise of Sun Princess has been canceled, due to a mutual agreement between the cruise line and the Fincantieri shipyard.

One other new entertainment venue, a magic-infused nightspot called Spellbound by Magic Castle, debuts Wednesday. Taken together, the additions and changes to dining on Sun Princess as compared to earlier Princess ships amount to a major new direction in dining for the line. Unlike such rival big-ship lines as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, Princess has never been known for offering a lot of dining choices on its ships. Are you the sort of cruiser who never likes to eat in the same place twice? The vessel has a far more diverse array of eateries than any Princess ship to date — a conscious effort by the line to offer its customers more options. Another major family-friendly upgrade for Sun Princess is the addition of far more connecting cabins (100) than is typical for a Princess ship, as well as a new category of larger Cabana Mini-Suite cabins that will appeal to families looking for more space.
